Late Dr. Durga Datt Joshi

Dr. Durga Datt Joshi was born on 10 May 1940 at Magarau VDC of Baitadi district, Far Western Development Region of Nepal. He completed high school education in 1956, Intermediate Science with Mathematics in 1958, Intermediate Science with Biology in 1961, BVSC&AH in 1965 and MPVM in 1971 from DAVIS, USA (under the Fulbright scholarship). He was research scholar at the National Animal Research Laboratory Ames, Iowa, USA in 1971 and received training on Microbiology at Clinical Microbiology Laboratory Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, University of California, Davis, USA, 1971. Similarly, he received UNEP/USSR Zoonoses Management Course from SeptemberNovember 1980, Moscow, USSR and Training Course on Veterinary Public Health from 424 October 1981, organized by Institute of Veterinary Medicine  FAO/WHO Collaboration Centre Research and Training in Food Hygiene and Zoonoses, Berlin (West) Germany.

He was decorated with prestigious award from Government of Nepal, Mahendra Vidya Bhusan in 1971 and Prabal Gorkha Daxin Bahu Medal in 1983. ). He was the fellow of Indian Society for malaria and other communicable Disease in 1979.

He has received Gold Medal awarded by Nepal Pediatric Society for best paper on Japanese Encephalitis in Children in 1983. Narendra Memorial Trust Award from Nepal Veterinary Association for outstanding contribution at National and International Level in the field of Veterinary Public Health for more than Thirty Years February 1999. Recently he was awarded prestigious Science and Technology Award for contribution on diagnosis, treatment and control of zoonotic disease and viral encephalitis for the year 2009/2010 by Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST).

Dr. Durga Datt Joshi was the founder of National Zoonoses and Food Hygiene Research Centre (NZFHRC) and worked as Executive Chairman from 1995 to 2013.

General Background of Institution

National Zoonoses and Food Hygiene Research Centre (NZFHRC) was established in 2049/2050 (1993) and registered under the Ministry of Social Welfare. It is situated at Jeevan Smriti Marg Ward – 13, Chagal, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). This office has its own building and equipped laboratory. Since the period of establishment, it has been conducting research in infectious and communicable zoonotic diseases.
